PGConf.EU 2024 Restaurants
PGConf.EU is the annual PostgreSQL Conference Europe, one - if not the - largest in-person PostgreSQL conference. In 2024 it took place in Athens, Greece.
And of course it involved going to quite a few reestaurants over the course of a week. This posting shows the different places we’ve been during and after the conference.
Sunday evening
Sunday evening we explored the resuarant options around the corner from the hotel.
The first pick was the Restaurant Barbaro Athens, a restaurant which only opened a couple of months ago. Good food and live music in the evening.
Monday evening
On Mondays we usually invite trainers and staff for a smaller (compared to the spekaers dinner on Tuesday) dinner. Our local guide did pick the Rakáki (Ρακάκι) Restaurant, about 15 minutes walking from the hotel. They have inside and outside seating and the restaurant is in a side street which does not see much car traffic.
Tuesday evening
Tuesday was the Speaker reception at the Black Duck Garden. THis is a spacious venue with an outside bar and a DJ. It is near the Athens City Museum, we walked there which took about 50 minutes. The reception is not a full dinner, but more finger food and drinks, although this was more than enough for me.
Wednesday evening
This evening has seen the Communiy Reception, which served enough food that I didn’t need another dinner. We only had drinks afterwards at the roof top bar.
Thursday evening
Another pick from the restaurants around the corner from the venue: the Oroscopo Restaurant. This place has a large seating area inside, some tables outside, and a small balcony upstairs which overlooks both the tables inside and the street.
Friday evening
Conference is over!
We went to the Strofi Athenian Restaurant (Στροφή Αθηναϊκό Εστιατόριο) in the city. This place has a wonderful view at the Acropolis!
Saturday evening
After all the sightseeing during the day, we got a reservation in another restaurant mostly for locaks: Ta Filetakia (Τα φιλετάκια). This place is not near the tourist areas, we walked there and stopped by the Daphne Viewpoint for a couple of night pictures from Athens. Very good food, friendly staff, funny owner.
Ice Cream
For my (almost) daily ice cream supply, I found the International Classic Patisserie not far from the conference venue. Besides the other ice cream places I found in the city, I visited the patisserie a couple of times.
Hotel bar and pool bar
Let’s not forget the hotel bar!
The Divani Caravel Hotel has a very nice rooftop bar with a pool. The area is split into two parts: the side facing the Acropolis is the pool with a separate small bar, mostly in use over the day. Separated by a wall, but with an opening, is the rooftop bar on the other side. The entire area features large windows with a wide view over the city, and comfortable chairs and couches.
